What is love? How much do you care about one another? What do you love about the other person? How long do you think you will stay together? What do people in love do? Are you being honest about how much you love one another? What are you afraid of will happen if you fall out of love? Is it fun to be in love?These are all questions that come to mind when people talk about “love”.
Webster’s dictionary describes love as a “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties” and “attraction based on sexual desire”. These definitions are completely different from each other, but both accurate.
Everyone has their own definition of love. In high school everyone experiences love in a different way. Some people fall in and out of love countless times, some people only love one person, and some people never find it. I have heard people say love is a dangerous thing, and others say it is one of the most beautiful feelings in life. Can it be both?
Last week I asked my friends what they thought love meant. Not one person had the same definition. These are some of the descriptions of love that I heard:
Rosie S. “Love is being there for someone, staying for someone who needs you even when it hurts you.”
Sophia V. “I think love is a feeling where you feel like nothing can go wrong. When you find a certain person who you care about more than anything, someone you can trust with anything and are as open with as possible. It makes you happy all the time, a constant state of pure happiness where you feel like nothing can go wrong, and that someone is always there for you, no matter what. Knowing someone’s always going to care about you in a deep way, or be there for you. To know that you have someone who’s going to think you’re beautiful, no matter how badly you’ve screwed up.”
Monica V. “Love is that feeling you get when your world is made up of this one special person and without that person, you seem empty.”
Adam L. “Love is an indescribable feeling you get when you’re so heartfelt towards and set on one specific object or human being.”
There are hundreds of millions of definitions for love, but it doesn’t mean that love always involves sex. When you feel like you love someone, sex does not have to happen. If you are in love, but not ready to have sex, then wait. If the person loves you back, even with their own unique definition of love, they will understand.
