East Los High: The Heart Always Knows
It’s a heartbreaking episode for the teens of East Los High. Maya’s struggles with her addiction, Ceci’s struggles with the lack of support from Abe, there are talks about birth control, and the tear-jerking end of the episode.
Maya claims she isn’t an addict; it was one time and it was one mistake. But no one believes her. After being released from the hospital, she finds herself at a rehab facility. She claims she isn’t going through withdrawal—just very bored. At home, Lupe pleads with Jessie to stay away from that man from church, but still refuses to say why.
Jacob and Abe have a conversation in Abe’s tattoo shop about who has the responsibility of thinking about birth control. Abe believes that it is strictly the female’s responsibility to take care of it. How did that work out for you Abe? Jacob is correct when he says it is something that BOTH people should think about. There are prevention methods that both individuals can use to avoid an unplanned pregnancy. Abe also tells Jacob that he only interacts with Ceci when he wants to be physical with her. This makes Jacob realize how he is glad Jessie is there and consequently, he promises Jessie he will be there for her and the baby. Ceci becomes empowered and starts to forget about Abe. She even goes out and buys a car seat for the baby herself, showing that she is starting to get ready to raise this baby on her own.
While at home, Lupe also asks Jessie to forgive Maya. The two girls did go through some tough times, but Lupe explains that she is family and she needs to forgive her. When the two start talking about the wedding, Jessie steps out of the room to grab a picture to show her mother. Jessie returns to see her mother has passed away and breaks down.
Jessie calls Paulina to share the heartbreaking news. Maya tells Paulina she wants to leave the rehab facility and come with her to Lupe’s house. When the two arrive to the home, we see Jessie and Maya embrace. This could be the new beginning of their relationship. Jacob also comes over to support the family and is reunited with Maya. The horrible situation outside the club doesn’t seem to faze them at this moment.
As the episode ends, we see Jessie’s landlord at her house. He tells her if she can’t pay the rent, she has to move out immediately. This is another stressor that Jessie has to deal with. It’s not like the passing of her mother, her pregnancy, and her upcoming wedding were enough. Maya also goes to church to share some words with Lupe. While she is there, Father Rodolfo sees her and seems to recognize her. This could be part of the reason why Lupe didn’t want to see him in the previous episode. He has to be linked to the family in some way. What do you think?
