East Los High: She’s My Mother
What did you think of today's episode of East Los High? Not a dry eye in the house on our end.
As they plan Lupe’s funeral and the family continues to grieve, it seems as if more family drama is brewing. Jessie is still working while Paulina plans the funeral. Jacob’s father sees that she is visibly upset. As he consoles her, she shares that she is being evicted from her home. He refuses to let her go homeless, and as the mother of his future grandchild, he invites her to move in with him and Jacob.
When the day of Lupe’s funeral arrives, Soli is greeting everyone at the door as they enter. Ceci comes to show her support for Jessie and pay her respects to Lupe. She explains to Soli that she wished she used protection when having sex with Abe because she wouldn’t be in this situation. Jacob and Maya also have a conversation at the funeral. While they have had a rocky past, they both are happy to see the other. Maya shares her future plans with Jacob. She is going to stick around the area, piece her life back together, and go to culinary school in Pasadena. He seems happy for her, but as they finish their conversation, Jessie walks by.
Jessie then asks Maya if she could promise her something. She asks Maya to leave East LA after the funeral and not to come back. She and Jacob are going to have a family and she can’t be involved in that. Passively, Maya agrees.
Also in this episode, we see Paulina in the car observing Maya as she drops a letter off at the church. Father Rodolfo receives it but Paulina doesn’t seem thrilled about it. We then finally find out his connection to the Martinez family. Paulina sits down and talks with him to explain her past. She says she kept a love affair secret between a young woman and a man who was older and respected. When the young girl was kicked out of her house after getting pregnant, the man denied fathering her baby. Paulina says she hasn’t forgiven herself for not sharing this information. We learn that her sister Reina and Father Rodolfo are Maya’s parents.
Soli and Paulie’s relationship is getting more intense, but Soli refuses to have sex with him until her birth control becomes effective. Jessie also has a doctor’s appointment and shares with the doctor that she is seriously considering other options. She and the doctor continue to discuss what the next steps would be if Jessie decided not to parent her baby.
At the funeral service, Father Rodolfo shares that Father Augustine is unable to perform the service as Lupe requested. Maya speaks about how Lupe taught her what love was and only saw the good things in her. She loved Lupe as if she was her own mother. As Father Rodolfo starts to speak, a woman walks into the church. He begins to stutter and seems visibly shaken as she continues to walk down the aisle. We learn that this woman is Reina, Lupe’s sister and Maya’s mother. WHAT!? Drama!
