Myth vs. Fact: Coke is It?
THE MYTH: Douching with Coca-Cola (“Coke”) right after sex will prevent pregnancy.
The urban myth that Coke can be used as a contraceptive has been around for decades, since before most of today’s modern contraceptive methods were readily available.
The common belief was that the acidity of the soft drink would kill sperm and the sugar would cause the sperm cells to explode. After sex, a girl would put warm Coke in her vagina, making the soda a spermicidal douche. Sounds messy, right?
THE TRUTH: Coke has many unconventional uses. You can soak pennies in it to make them shiny. You can use it to tenderize a pot roast. You can even use if to help get sticky gum out of your hair. Coke does not, however, work as a contraceptive. Here’s why:
- Coke is not very effective in killing sperm. At best, Coke’s sperm-killing potency is relatively weak when compared to other easily available over-the-counter spermicides.
- Douching of any variety isn’t an effective method of pregnancy prevention. Sperm are extremely fast swimmers—hundreds of thousands of them can reach the cervical canal within seconds meaning that, by the time you’re trying this method, it’s already too late.
Douching with Coke can also have other negative heath effects, too. If the acidity of Coke can remove rust from metal—which it can—just imagine what it does to the sensitive tissue inside the vagina. Coke damages the top layers of cells and could make a woman more prone to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Also, the friendly bacteria that help keep the vagina healthy could be adversely affected by the high levels of sugar in Coke. This could lead to vaginal yeast and bacterialinfections.
OUR VERDICT: Douching with Coke right after sex will NOT prevent pregnancy. Coke is not a good spermicide and douching isn’t going to help— and may even hurt—your chances of avoiding a pregnancy. WHAT OTHER TEENS ARE SAYING:
This isn’t a myth…its not something new either. This method was used by some women in the past to flush their…”sensitive parts” after intercourse in an attempt to prevent pregnancy. There’s a paper published in New England Journal of Medicine in 1985 claiming this works. However, subsequent studies show otherwise..its not *that* weird

See the irresponsibility of selfish men out there. I’m a guy, and it’s repulsive to see teens that do what they can never take back. Trade a night of pleasure for a week (or life) of regret and shame. The best way to not get pregnant? Abstinence.

A lot of people try a lot of things to get rid of sperm so they won’t get pregnant. This is repulsive. Coke is not meant for any other oriface but your mouth! That’s why it hurts when coke sprays out of your nose. Because of the acidic level. There’s a 100% chance that if you don’t have sex then you won’t get pregnant. Most partners in a relationship will try to pressure the other relationship partner into sex by saying “If you loved me you would have sex with me.” but that is untrue. If THEY loved YOU then they would respect your desicions. Trust and honesty are HUGE factors in a relationship. Teen pregnancy is a HUGE problems guys and girls but if we all work together it won’t happen. Thank you.
People keep trying all these things to prevent pregnancy but the only way to prevent it 100% is to not have sex. Many teens don’t understand that sex is not a good idea until you’ve talked to your parents about it, talked to your relationship partner about it, and have reached an age to where you understand and to where it is safe. Your partner in a relatioonship may preesure you by saying “If you loved me you would have sex with me.” but that’sa lie. If THEY loved YOU then they would respect your desicions! yeah, it’s gross, but when the rumor started, contraceptives weren’t readily available. I mean, people probably did it more “back then” than they do now.
And about damaging the tissue, I’m sure the carbonation plays a part in it, too; not just the sugar.
