The College Experience

College, college, college…college is something just about every child looks forward to. Entering into college is like a coming of age for us young adults. It represents having the freedom of an adult but being financially supported like a child in your parent’s house. College is where many people find out who they truly are and what their purpose is in life. When we enter high school, we always hear stories from those who went onto college before us, anticipating our chance to finally experience all the wonderful things we have heard about.

Towards the ending of my senior year, college was all that was on my mind. I was anxious to know what school I would end up at, how it would be, if I would make a lot of friends, and if I would make good grades. I thought about college so much that I forgot I was still in high school. I was excited and I couldn’t hold it back. It felt that going off to college would be a new start for me, a chance to build a better reputation for myself and prove the people at home wrong. I knew it would be my time to show my family, friends, and the world that I am determined to fulfill my dreams.

Then hardest thing about college was deciding which one to go to. There are so many factors that go into choosing the right school. You have to consider the school, academics, campus life, environment, what the school has to offer, extracurricular activities, and many more. Cost is a big deal when it comes to choosing a college. Many colleges offer numerous scholarships, but at the same time many of them don’t. You have to know which schools are generous and which ones aren’t.

The city life is also very important when choosing the right college. If the city has a bad reputation and a high crime rate, it might not be such a good idea. You have to do your research on every factor of your school. You have to find if the school is accredited and what majors they offer. Your whole junior and senior year basically needs to be devoted to choosing the right school for you.

I choose Jackson State University for many reasons. My first reason was because of the “Sonic Boom of the South” which is the marching band here at Jackson State. The “Sonic Boom of the South” is one of the most famous bands in the world. They hold a touch of tradition that has a way of catching everyone’s attention. Jackson State is also known for their famous dance line, the “Prancing Jsettes.” I love these girls with all my heart. They are the mother of all HBCU dance lines throughout the country. The band and dance line here at JSU are only extensions of what they really have to offer. The music program here is one of the top in the nation and the Dance Ensemble here can’t be touched.

So far, my experience here at Jackson State has been GREAT! I have made a lot of friends that might become life long friends. I have traveled to cities I have always heard about like Memphis and New Orleans. I have even found out some new things about myself. I’m doing well in my classes and making better grades than I did in high school. In my opinion, college is slightly easier than high school. Classes aren’t back to back and you don’t meet everyday. You also get to create your own schedule so you can choose classes and time that work for you. It helps you to feel more in control than in high school. In high school you are told what classes to take and when to go. You have to go to school for up to eight hours straight. In college, that’s totally different. You have many breaks between classes and if you get sleepy, you can always walk back to your room and take a nap. College is like a city all in a convenient little space. You have restaurants, game rooms, pool, bowling, gym to workout, dance studios, courts to play sports, and many other things.

I can say that I truly love love love college and I think that the next four years of my life will be the best four years of my life, but I’ll keep you updated.

Devin is 18 and from Albany, Georgia. He is a member of The National Campaign’s Youth Leadership Team. This one time, he did a toe-touch, in front of the White House, while wearing a bow-tie. It was pretty awesome. Have a question for Devin? Email us!

It’s great to see that you have a fantastic attitude towards College, and I really hope you enjoy every moment of it. These “four years” may seem long, but you may undergo many transformations within yourself.
